Baltic amber (international mineralogical term- succinite) is fossilized resin of different trees, mainly coniferous trees growing on vast areas of the south part of the Scandinavian Peninsula and adjoining areas of the present-day Baltic Sea about 45-50 million years ago. Amber is one of few precious stones known to men since ancient times. Men were attracted to amber by its radiance, softness, flexibility during processing and unique properties. Different classifications point to 62-65 types of amber. Baltic amber contains hight amount of succinic acid (up to 8%) and many (about 5%) trace elements such as silicon, magnesium, iron, calcium, potassium, vanadium, zinc, iodine and organic compounds combined with iodine, volatile substances and resin acids.
